Top 4A/5A boys wrestlers head to finals

. Mountain View head coach Hank Weiss right and assistant coach Chad Blevins coach one of their wrestlers during the 4A state meet at the UCCU Center in Orem on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025.

…The 4A and 5A meet started Tuesday at the UCCU Event Center on the campus of Utah Valley University. In the usual two-day format, the semifinals and blood round matches to place in the top six, are held on the second day. But since the 3A and 6A are starting their tournaments on Wednesday, the UHSAA pushed this round to the first day.

The 3A and 6A tourney will run in the morning and early afternoon with the 4A and 5A finishing their meet up in the evening with the Parade of Champions at 7 pm with the championship finals to follow.

More matches on the first day still made for an exciting day with team races for trophies still undecided.

4A Notes

Uintah (268) will win its fifth straight state title as the Utes have an insurmountable lead over second place Mountain View (159) and third place Timpanogos (150).

Timpanogos had a lead over their Orem city rival for most of the day but the Bruin star power in the upper weights came through as Mason Grow (165), Hyrum Stafford (175), Landon Shumway (190) and Isaac McGee (215) all won their bouts. Add in Glade Harman at 132 pounds and the Bruins put five wrestlers in the championship finals…

Timpanogos was poised to pull an upset at 190 pounds as Micah Wilcox led Mountain Viewโ€™s Landon Shumway. But Shumway put Wilcox on his back and earned the pin.

Then at 215 pounds McGee got an important head-to-head win by pin over Dallin Bowman of Timpanogos.

The Timberwolves do have nine wrestlers alive in the tournament while the Bruins have seven, so second place is far from settled….

About

Wrestling is one of the oldest and most respected sports, combining strategy, skill, and athleticism. It challenges both the body and mind, teaching endurance, discipline, and mental toughness. Beyond the mat, wrestlers gain life skills like perseverance, respect, and confidence. More than a sport, wrestling shapes character, builds friendships, and fosters success on and off the mat.
