Watching your wrestler compete can be harder than you expected. You want to help when they get stuck, and you feel the disappointment when a match goes badly. You can be in their corner without giving another set of instructions.

Give them one coaching voice

During a match, cheer them on and let the coach handle technique. “Keep working” is encouragement. Shouting a different move from the stands gives your wrestler one more thing to sort out.

Support the whole team, too. Notice the wrestler waiting for a first match and the teammate coming off a difficult one. A familiar face in the stands matters.

Let the ride home be a ride home

Before reviewing the match, ask whether your wrestler wants to talk. They may want quiet, a snack, or a conversation about something else. “I loved watching you wrestle” can be enough.

If they do want to talk, listen first. Try one question: “What felt good today?” or “What do you want to work on next?” You do not have to solve the whole day before you get home.

Notice more than the score

Be specific about something you saw: encouraging a teammate, listening to a coach, or continuing to work through a hard exchange. Keep the praise honest and leave room for their own feelings about the match.

Your wrestler can be disappointed and still know you are proud to be their parent. Keep showing up. Let their goals belong to them, and make sure they know your support goes home with them, whatever the result.
