Gus Higgins
. At 144 pounds, Gus Higgins, a determined sophomore with 11 years of wrestling under his belt, is making waves on and off the mat. Known by his nickname “Gusywusy,” this standout wrestler has already racked up major accomplishments, including being a Greco State Champion and a two-time state qualifier—an impressive feat for someone still early in their high school career.
But it’s not just his titles that set him apart. Gus is known for his explosive and crowd-pleasing moves—particularly the “Gus Bomb” and his signature chest wrap—which have become staples of his matches. One of his proudest moments came when he clinched a win in overtime to qualify for state, a performance that showcased not only his technique but his mental toughness and will to win.
When asked why he started wrestling, Gus’s response is as authentic as it gets: “So I could fight my older brothers.” That competitive spirit has fueled his passion for the sport ever since. Beyond the competition, though, what Gus treasures most are the friendships he’s built through wrestling—a testament to the tight-knit culture the sport fosters.
His biggest inspiration? None other than Kyle Dake, a world-class wrestler known for his work ethic and resilience—qualities Gus mirrors in his own training. His advice to teammates is simple but powerful: “Keep going.” It’s the mindset of someone who knows that progress often comes down to persistence.
Before each match, Gus sticks to his routine: visualizing victory—a mental practice many elite athletes swear by. And he lives by the motto: “After you have wrestled, everything else in life is easy.”
Outside of wrestling, Gus is a fan of chocolate milk and enjoys pulling off flips on both the trampoline and the ground—a surprising skill that reflects his athleticism and fearless nature.
Looking ahead, Gus has his eyes on even bigger goals: winning a state title and wrestling at the collegiate level. If his drive and achievements so far are any indication, he’s well on his way.
